No Storms...

Dude, it sure looked like it was going to storm. I have to admit that I'm finding my greatest challenge with getting three days in one week. Some weeks I get in all three days, but mostly I don't. I have to work on that. Some of it is weather and part of it is just being exhausted. I have to re-evaluate my goals and amp up my commitment level. You can do it!!!!

On the bright side, it didn't storm but it sure looked like it was going to. I went out and did a much better warm up today. I ran through a bunch of calisthenics and did some basic martial arts warms ups doing a series of kicks, nothing fancy. I did do some mountain climbers on the pavement and it didn't kill me. Those are when you go down into push up position and start a running motion with your knees going into your chest. It's great to get your cardio up really fast. I stretched and then had an awesome run. I'm still on module 2, but next week I'm moving up.

What changes have I noticed? For one, it's not that I'm necessarily running faster but I'm covering a lot more ground in 90 seconds then when I first started. My stride is a little wider and my landings have been smoother and lighter. On a couple of those 90 second runs, after recovery, I actually covered almost a quarter of the park. This is a significant improvement.

Now on Saturday morning I'm going out and running with my long lost cousin who is in training for soccer tryouts at her new High School. She has to get up to running 1.5 miles in under 14 minutes. I think this is ambitious for High School soccer - but then again, soccer is all about running, throw a ball in there and that's the sport. As you can tell, I know nothing about soccer. LOL. So in order to accomplish this goal, we are going to start at module one and get her up to being able to run for 14 minutes straight, or more. Then we'll work on the speed.

As for speed training, I am learning that one of the keys is to make sure to stretch and work on your flexibility especially in the hip area. This will open the stride up and help to cover a lot more ground in a shorter amount of time.

Till next time....
